Blue Shimmer lamp-base
The lamp-base is inspired by Pheonician amphorae and by a remarkable glaze. The glaze is a combination of manganese, cobalt and iron oxides. A textured surface allows it to pool to an inky black, gleaming to a high gloss. But when it breaks it is a shimmering blue.
My brain-wave for the texture was to replicate cauliflower. I cast the vegetable in plaster to make a set of sprig moulds, which I then pressed soft clay into. Once firm I attached the clay sprigs to the amphora shaped lamp-base.
