2 stoneware cups
The fuel used to fire clay changes everything. This is what I was exploring through the stoneware cups.
The 2 cups are simple, open tea cups with neat round handles. Excellent for hot chocolate or herbal tea. They are made of a buff clay body, recognised for its rustic qualities and the dark flecks that appear when it is fired.
Each cup was decorated with slips from contrasting clay bodies; porcelain, crank, volcan and terracotta. One has been fired in an electric, the other in a gas kiln. The electric kiln has toasted the clay, resulting in shades of sandy browns highlighted with chalky white. While the flames from the gas kiln have been fed by oxygen in the clay and slip. This has produced honey browns and darker tones.
